Mixed Media

This giraffe design is my first mixed media piece, in that it involves colored pencil as well as floss. It includes two-, three-, four- and six-strand stitching. Back, split, outline, satin, French knot, and Portuguese knotted stem stitch were used in the creation. It is a commission piece, the original design was a German sparkling water advertisement from early last century. The background and giraffe's white were filled in with art-grade colored pencils, the entire piece is in an 8 x 10" frame to give a sense of scale. It was recently delivered to the intended recipient and I was given to know they liked it - which is always a plus!

Coming soon - a clothing "tattoo" on the back panel of a work jacket, followed by some interesting variations on a theme!

Keep your needles sharp!

My First Interview and a Pause by the Roadside to Catch Up on Life

Good morning, stitch fans!

It's been forever since I've updated - there's been a truckload of crazy going on at Nimble & Quick but I had to pump the brakes, slow down long enough to put fingers to keyboard, and bring the place up to speed about what's been happening lately. I've moved physical locations, had my first pieces in a public show, been hip deep in design work, getting new commissions, meeting local artists and stitch fans, making plans for my first local show, discussing a new and different store, and I find myself this morning at a milestone.  It's a good place to pause for a moment of reflection. Starting with the most recent and working backwards - try not to get blogsick - let's recount.

The milestone I mention is my very first interview as a fiber artist - I was asked to take part in the eMbroidery series on Mr X Stitch, a monthly feature taking a look at the world of male embroiderers. I am deeply honored to be included among some very august company indeed, and the questions were very good. I hope my answers do them justice - if you were curious about what makes me tick a bit, this is a great time to find out! You can find the interview here: http://www.mrxstitch.com/2012/07/22/embroidery-jack-b-nimble/
This is my fifth appearance on the site and I can't thank Jamie and his crew of stitchy miscreants enough for all they do for the world of stitching! I think if I get to six appearances I win my choice of a toaster oven or left-handed stork scissors!

Speaking of features, I've been popping up on other sites in the interwebs, including Fuck Yeah Embroidery, Craft Gossip, Faster Kittykill, A Cuppa Tea With Me, and Feeling Stitchy! My thanks go out to each of these sites and the kind folks behind them!

Shows! Exhibits! Fairs! All of these words pique the interest of artists, regardless of medium, and I definitely perk my ears when I hear them. I stitch what I stitch for my own benefit, to be sure, but it's fun to get your work into the public eye - not to get too Zen about it, but does visual art exist if no one sees it?  At any rate, my work is currently on display at Tate's in Lauderhill, Florida through August 11th as part of the "Sew Nerdy" group show curated by Bear and Bird Boutique + Gallery. You can find more details and shop for some really cool work on Bear and Bird's website and there are links to opening night pics in their Flickr feed too!

Speaking of works and exhibits, I've been in conversation with Romy Shafkind, the mind behind Black Dog Art in Salt Lake City. She's a wonderful lady and a great artist and her shop is a wonderland (she sells on Etsy too)!  Romy plans to move her shop later this summer and has kindly offered me exhibit space in her new location for the local gallery stroll this September, so stay tuned for more info and details!  If you take a gander at her Page or Etsy storefront, you'll definitely get a feel for what my theme will be. I'm really looking forward to it!

One of the best parts of being an artist in a great community of creative people is the possibility of collaboration - and there have been murmurs of conversation around the idea of becoming a part of a greater collaborative effort locally, working with some great folks to present art in different media all on one place and offering it to the public for purchase and support. I will definitely keep y'all apprised of happenings on that front. A part of being a member of the local art movement is getting the process out in the public eye as well, which is why I hosted my very first Stitch 'N Bitch (think postmodern sewing circle) at SteamHead Cafe earlier this month - it was a lovely evening and a great time was had by all - the only thing cooler than the projects going was the conversation that accompanied the action!

My thanks, as always, go out to my fans and supporters who make my work possible!  As per the usual, you can see what's hot off the hoop on my Flickr photostream and there are works for sale in the Etsy store - remember I do custom work, contact me at nqthreadcraft@gmail.com for more information or to place a request!

Busy busy busy! What I've been doing & how I price it

This whole self-employed artist bit has me in a bit of a spin as I learn the ropes and try to keep myself together while maintaining an Internet presence and keep on stitching! So many details and so much to keep track of - whew! Sometimes it's good to take a moment and take stock, so let's do some of that!

News:

In hot Nimble & Quick news, we are pleased to announce the first Nimble & Quick Threadcraft exhibition - it'll be a part of a group show in June entitled "Sew Nerdy" taking place in the Palm Beach, Florida area! Exciting, exciting, exciting! Keep a weather eye out for new nerdy designs!

What's Happening:

Speaking of nerds, here's the hottest piece off the hoop from the workshop!

In a 5" frame, this little beauty is composed mainly of hundreds of colonial knots surrounded by a whipped stem stitch in purple and pink - the colors of the original Nerds candy. While one might expect that I'd submit this for the "Sew Nerdy" show, I don't know yet - I had this piece in the works before the invite ever came! Serendipity, I guess.

In other news, I've been involved in a couple of stitching swaps and am having a riotously good time! In the first, folks over at the Phat Quarter at Flickr are in the midst of a Spring-themed Fifth Friday Swap. Inspired by Easter, here's the design my swap partner received:

A fusion of traditional themes and zombie culture, this lovely piece (a Nimble & Quick original) was stitched in two- and three-strand floss in stem and outline stitching.

I'm also involved in another stitchy swap with a circle of stitchy friends including the always irrepressible Bascom Hogue, for whom I stitched a Facebook profile photo:

It's my first attempt at portraiture, two-strand antique yellow floss on green linen, outline, stem, long & short, and back stitching. I consider this some of my best work to date.

Also, for myself, I did a little stitching of my very own on a thrifted Dickies workshirt:
I've been asked about the font on this one - it's my very own handwriting! You'll be seeing more of it, methinks!

Stitching has been happening, I've not been very good about updating - but as you can see, Nimble & Quick can handle pop art designs, portrait work, traditional stitchery, and we can do custom embroidered customizing at reasonable prices! Email nqthreadcraft@gmail.com for details.

How I Price It:

Like all folk who create with their hands and sell the fruits of that labor to the public, I struggle with how to price my work.  You can see the entire gamut of pricing for stitchery out there in the world, so how does one decide where the price point falls?  The struggle is finding a balance between offering the work at a reasonable price without opening yourself up the possibility of becoming an underage Nike sweatshop worker in Asia. So I price based on what I think my time stitching is worth and this is how it works:
I price my work at roughly $10 per hour for production time, some pieces less. You pay me for my stitching time only. Because I do derive some benefit personally from the work itself and I understand that the economy is in the crapper and we all have money issues, I only charge for my actual time putting needle through thread. You don't pay for concept time, design, layout, stenciling, transfers, material gathering, ironing, washing, prepping, finishing, or mounting. Those take time too, but those are my gift to the customer because I love the work and I hope you do too.

Is it worth it?

In our 21st century world of high tech and mass production, it does my heart good to see a movement back to things that are handmade. When you buy a piece of stitching, you're buying a work of love. Another human being held that item in their hands for hours, days, weeks sometimes, patiently thinking of where to put the next stitch, conceiving the final picture, struggling to give life to the concept in their mind struggling to get free.  Not only that, you're buying an heirloom.  Chances are with a little care and forethought, a stitch piece will still be around when it's time for you to give your stuff to your grandkids. I doubt we can say the same about our smartphones, tablets, laptops, or big screen TVs. I've seen centuries-old stitching on Antiques Roadshow but I've yet to see even a transistor radio yet.

Give the gift of love, handicraft, and history.  Give a stitch and buy some stitching - you'll be glad you did!

Until next we meet - keep your needles sharp and Happy Stitching!

New Toons and What's Next

Happy happy Thursday! I am excited because I get to watch The Big Bang Theory tonight rather than basketball play-offs, and I get to introduce the two new arrivals to the Nimble & Quick Threadcraft Etsy store!

You know him, you love him, you want to hunt wabbits with him ...

And of course, a very cool cat indeed ...
http://www.etsy.com/listing/96339849/top-cat-striped-seersucker-toon
Both are available in the Etsy store!

So ... what's next? I'm busy at the moment working on a logo stitch for my friends at SteamHead Cafe and on my very own white whale - my WPA BAWIP.  After these, I have a cuff design I'm working on for an old friend and have some wordy stitchery in mind next for those who prefer a little more snark with their embroidery.

Stay tuned! If nothing else, at least it'll be vaguely amusing! 'Til next time, keep your fingers nimble and your needles quick!

Outside the Shop - Meet Mr. X Stitch

There is an entire world beyond the doors of my shop. There are a lot of other stitchers out there, and some of them I'm lucky enough to speak with from time to time. Occasionally I'm going to be talking about some of these folks, and today I wanted to talk about my first manbroidery experience - Jamie "Mr. X Stitch" Chalmers.

I love Mr. X Stitch. It's true. Call it a man-crush, call it a bromance, really call it neither of those things because our beards would get stuck together and that would make for awkward explanations to the respective ladies in our lives. He's also eleventy feet, thirteen inches tall as evidenced by this photo.

What I do have for Jamie "Mr. X Stitch" Chalmers is a deep and abiding respect.  I dig his patterns, I dig his site (and not just because I've been featured twice - NSFW Saturday and Stitchgasm), and I dig his philosophy about stitching.  He was recently interviewed and the video is available here: http://vimeo.com/38840710

He and Bridget "Beefranck" Franckowiak (who is awesomesauce in her own right) also create and host Stitching and Junk - the World's Best Stitching Podcast as well as keep things afloat at mrxstitch.com (where you get new and very cool updates from the world of fiber every damn day).

He is involved in the stitching world in so many ways - he's an inspiration to me and manbroiderers everywhere! Keep up the good work, Mr. X Stitch!

Next time Outside the Shop I'll be jumping from the bushes to take another stitcher entirely by surprise with my heartfelt adulation and gushing praise!

New Listings Are Here! Is There Something Different in the Shop?

Huzzah! Despite the winds and ides of March, we are still standing (mostly) and still producing!  Today Nimble & Quick Threadcraft proudly unveils the new Saturday Morning Series, a flashback to those days of yore, sitting in front of the Tee-Vee with a bowl of sugar disguised as cereal! We're making portraits of some of the fun characters of yesteryear, from film to print to TV.

Maybe you recognize this guy?

So come by the Etsy store and have a look at what we have to offer!  We've reworked the shop a little and lowered our prices!  Shipping is no longer free, but you only have to pay one small shipping fee per order - order more than one piece at a time and save!

As always, come by our Facebook Page and say hi or give us a "Like" or check me out on Facebook as well - I'm always up for new friends, go ahead and add me!

Until next time - when I show off the coffee shop logo for a great new spot in SLC - keep your fingers nimble and your needles quick!

March is here!

I can't believe it's been a whole month - and a busy month it's been! The Etsy store is up and running, there is a Facebook business page (go ahead and Like us, we don't mind!), and I have a Facebook profile as well and you can go ahead and friend me if you'd like!

Production has been a little slow this month due to cold and flu season, but this custom piece did get shipped earlier this month - a custom 3" x 4" patch.
Also on the hoop currently there is a WPA poster reproduction (more on that in a future post), a nature scene, and some other randomness!  New supplies are on their way to the workshop as we speak and I can't wait to get my hands on new frames and floss!

Coming soon: Nimble & Quick's first giveaway! Stay tuned for more details!

As always, keep your needles sharp and happy stitching!
